The Registrar of Aligarh Muslim University, Group Captain Shahrukh Shamshad has resigned from his post on health grounds on Monday, September 29, 2014. The University has clarified that the Registrar willingly tendered his resignation at 9.30 am. The Vice Chancellor accepted it at 10 am and it was promulgated. Dr. Asfar Ali Khan of the Department of Electrical Engineering has been appointed officiating Registrar till the selection of a new Registrar is made.

'Once a resignation is promulgated, it cannot be retracted', said Dr. Rahat Abrar, PRO of the University. The Registrar did send an email at 11.26 am alleging he had resigned under duress. It is a baseless allegation and the Vice Chancellor has not allowed him to retract the resignation??, said PRO.
As the news of "forcible resignation" spread, students gheraoed the administrative block of the varsity and a large number of Shamshad's supporters gathered at his residence, exhorting him to take a stand and fight back. In the meanwhile, the University administration expressed surprise that a group of students tried to create a ruckus on an issue, which does not concern them at all.
"The VC called me to his room and said that he has lost trust in me. I resigned under stress and asked for permission to leave for home. After calming down I realized that I shouldn't have let this happen, so I retracted my resignation but it was not accepted," alleged Shamshad, talking to students and reporters.
