Actor Farooq Sheikh dies of heart attack in Dubai on December 28

Noted Veteran actor Farooq Sheikh passed away this morning in Dubai due to heart attack. Sources said the 65-year-old actor was on a holiday in Dubai with his family. A renowned name in parallel cinema, Farooq Sheikh was best known for his roles in Satyajit Ray's Shatranj Ke Khiladi, Sai Paranjpe's Chashme Baddoor and Sagar Sarhadi's Bazaar. He won the 2010 National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan's Lahore.

He has worked with famous directors of parallel cinema like Satyajit Ray, Muzaffar Ali, Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Ketan Mehta. He has acted in many serials and shows on television and performed on stage in famous productions such as Tumhari Amrita (1992), alongside Shabana Azmi, directed by Feroz Abbas Khan.  He has been the host of very popular TV show "Jeena issi ka naam hai" (Season 1st) in which he interviewed many Bollywood celebrities. His sense of humor and direct humble approach was the USP of the show.

Farooq Sheikh was born to Mustafa Sheikh, a Mumbai lawyer and Farida Sheikh at Amroli in Baroda district of Gujarat. He was belonging to a Zamindar family, and  grew up in luxurious surroundings. He went to St. Mary's School, Mumbai and then to St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. He studied law at Siddharth College of Law.

In his early days, he was active in theatre, doing plays with IPTA and with well-known directors like Sagar Sarhadi. His first major film role was in the 1973 film Garam Hawa. He went onto act in several notable films such as Satyajit Ray's Shatranj Ke Khiladi (Chess Players) (1977), Noorie (1979), Chashme Buddoor (1981) and Kissi Se Na Kehna (1983). He formed a successful pair with Deepti Naval. He also did a slightly negative role in Deepti Naval-Naseeruddin Shah starrer 'Katha', again with Deepti Naval in one of the Yash Chopra's Rohan Kapoor-Faraha starrer 'Faasle'.
