UPSC Examination Results / Result 2011-12, Shena Aggarwal is the topper

Delhi, May 4: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Friday declared the results of the Civil Services 2011-12 examinations. This time two female candidates occupied the top two spots, while Shena Aggarwal, an MBBS from AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) achieved the top position, the second spot went to Rukmani Riar, a Master of Arts in Social Entrepreneurship from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Mumbai. A resident of Yamuna Nagar in Haryana, Shena cleared the UPSC exam in her 3rd attempt, whereas Rukmani cleared the premier exam of the country in her first attempt.

Prince Dhawan, an M Tech (Electrical Engineer) from IIT Delhi cracked the Civil Services exam in first attempt and secured the third position. The top 25 candidates include 6 female candidates (including two top positions) and 19 males (including 01 visually challenged candidate). Of the top 25 candidates – 13 appeared from Delhi; three from Jaipur, two each from Mumbai and Chandigarh; and one each from Hyderabad, Chennai, Dispur, Patna and Jammu centres. The top 25 candidates include alumni from some of the premier educational institutions of the country including AIIMS, IIM and IITs. An alumnus of London School of Economics also figures in the top 25.

The family background of top 25 candidates show diverse representation from all walks of the life which include farmer, teacher, businessman, army personnel, low and middle level government servants, doctors, advocate, professor and civil servants. Amongst top 25 candidates, 6 have made to the merit list in their first attempt; 07 in second attempt; 09 in third attempt; and one each in fourth, fifth and sixth attempts. As many as 12 have already been recommended to services other than IAS on the basis of Civil Services Examinations of previous years.

The Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2011 was conducted on June 12, 2011. A total of 4,72,290 candidates applied for the examination, out of which 2,43,003 candidates actually appeared. For the Main written examination held in October-November, 2011 a total of 11984 candidates were declared qualified out of which 2417 candidates were selected for the Personality Test conducted in March-April, 2012.
Finally, 910 candidates (715 male and 195 female) have been recommended for appointment to the IAS, IFS, IPS and other Central Services against 1001 reported vacancies. Vacancies unfilled presently are on account of 91 reserved community candidates qualifying on general standards. Depending on the options exercised by them finally, these vacancies will be filled by candidates recommended for the Reserve List that is maintained by the Commission.

The successful candidates include 420 General (including 21 physically challenged candidates), 255 Other Backward Classes (including 8 physically challenged candidates), 157 Scheduled Castes (including four physically challenged candidate) and 78 from the Scheduled Tribes.

The result also showcases the pan-Indian distribution of successful candidates. Amongst the top 25 candidates, there are candidates claiming domicile from as many as 16 States, i.e., Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chattisgarh, Delhi, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamilnadu, Uttarakhand amd Uttar Pradesh.

UPSC has opened a ‘Facilitation Counter’ near the Examination Hall Building in its campus.

Candidates can view results in UPSC site http//www.upsc.gov.in. This will be available within 15 days of result declaration.
