Araria:  Taslimuddin's son Sarfaraz Alam, the ruling JD(U) MLA in Araria district of Bihar surrendered before a local court today (April 26, 2012) in connection with a case charging him with assaulting a petrol pump owner. The son of former union minister of state for home Md Taslimuddin, Sarfaraz Alam surrendered before judicial magistrate P K Ratan. He was later granted bail. The court also granted bail to three other accused in the case.

On Wednesday, the court had  issued a non-bailable warrant arrest against Alam, an MLA from Jokihat in Araria district, in connection with the case charging him with assaulting the petrol pump owner, Sanjya Mishra, in Araria about a decade ago. Araria judicial magistrate P.K. Ratan issued the warrant against Sarfaraz in a case lodged with Town police station under sections 147, 149, 336 and 504 of the Indian Penal Code.

Sanjay Kumar Mishra, a resident of Forbesganj, had lodged the case in 2002 accusing Sarfaraz and his five supporters of assault and loot. As per the allegations the supporters of Sarfaraz and Zakir Anwar (former Forbesganj MLA) had clashed with each other during election of local bodies in 2002. The dispute erupted between the two groups over the election of Vijay Mishra to the post of chairman of Nagar Parishad.

Sarfaraz was earlier released on bail in the case. But his parole was cancelled after he failed to fulfil the bail conditions. Sources said Sarfaraz did not turn up before the court despite repeated notices, prompting the court to cancel his bail. Subsequently, a non-bailable warrant was issued.

Sarfaraz was first elected to the Assembly on a Rashtriya Janata Dal ticket in 2000. In the 2005 Assembly polls, he lost to JD(U) Candidate Manzer Alam from Jokihat. In the 2010 elections, he won from Jokihat as a JD(U) candidate.
