New Delhi: The Delhi based AMUCC (Aligarh Muslim University Coordination Committee) working as a facilitator to smoothen way for the proposed AMU Special Centre in Kishanganj organized an awareness programme at Jamia Hamdard on Saturday (Feb 25, 2012). The programme was intended to make the students and teaching staffs aware of the latest development and hurdles before the establishment of special centre in Kishanganj. Led by the convenor Mohammad Aslam, the awareness campaign was joined by PROs and core team members of AMU Coordination Committee.

In the three hours long interaction session the members of AMUCC shared the steps taken by the group in the past and its future course of action. During the session, members shared that since its establishment on June 25, 2010, the coordination committee had organized various meetings, conferences, seminars and a number of awareness programme. The AMUCC had also met the key political leaders from Bihar and other parts of country including Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, Minister of States HRD E. Ahamed, JD (U) President Sharad Yadav, RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav and HRD Minister of Bihar P K Shahi among many others.

After presenting the past activities in brief, the AMUCC PRO Mohammad Mudassir Alam highlighted the current status of AMU Kishanganj. He shared that after the agreement signing on December 30, 2011 at Kishanganj between Bihar Government and AMU administration the Central government has not taken any step further. In fact, the former Vice Chancellor Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis after his visit to Kishanganj sent a letter to Union Ministry of Human Resource and Development (UMHRD) on January 4, 2012 for getting the approval from Visitor (President of India).

On the AMUCC’s approach to MHRD it was found that the file of AMU Kishanganj is pending with the ministry and almost unnoticed. The secretary of MHRD mentioned the HRD Minister Kapil Sibal is busy in Congress party’s election campaigns hence the AMU Special Centre in Kishanganj approval might take time. The officials in the ministry were not at all looking serious for the AMU Special Centre in Kishanganj. When the AMUCC team met with E. Ahamed (Mos HRD) he too had expressed his limitations and mentioned the further action depends on the HRD Minister Kapil Sibal.

Although the special centres at Murshidabad (West Bengal) and Mallapuram (Kerala) are functioning now, but lots of hurdles are faced due to limited budget from Centre and gap in communication with the state governments. The proposed AMU centre in Kishanganj has remained a part of controversy since its announcement in the year 2009. After a long series of blame-game and political controversies the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the state government and AMU administration. Earlier the AMU Kishanganj lovers were frustrated with the delay made by the Bihar Government, but the approach of Centre is discouraging as well.

The awareness campaign at Jamia Hamdard was focused on encouraging the students and teaching staffs of the university to join hands for the AMU Centre Kishanganj. All were worried after knowing the latest status of AMU Special Centre in Kishanganj and the negligent approach of the Congress led UPA government. The awareness campaign remained successful and the attendants shown willingness to join the AMU Coordination Committee. They also ensured their full support to get the approval done from the MHRD and President of India.

It is really a matter of concern that the Central government which is lauding its concern for minorities during the poll campaigns in the 5 states especially in Uttar Pradesh, doesn’t showing its interest for establishing the 5 Special centres of AMU after getting the recommendations of Sachchar committee, Rangnathan Mishra committee and Fatmi committee. Need of the hour is that the UPA government should seriously think about the recommendations of Sachchar Committee unless the condition of Muslims will remain same for next many decades. AMU Kishanganj is a ray of hope for millions of deprived people residing in Bihar and neigbouring states of Jharkhand and West Bengal. If the official hurdles from the Centre are not cleared on time, the Bihar Government has the right to withdraw the offered land from AMU as per the agreement.

The awareness programme at Jamia Hamdard was organised by AMUCC member and Pharmacy students Murteza Iqubal, Wasim Akhtar and Jahangir Alam. AMUCC team and convenor Mohammad Aslam expressed satisfaction over the arrangement made by the Hamdard team and also praised their hospitality. The next general body meeting of AMUCC is scheduled in Jamia Millia Islamia that dates are yet to be decided.
