Panchayat Elections: A trend leading to corruption at village level

2
The Panchayat polls were recently concluded in Bihar, and the result was declared a couple of days back. Claimed as the dream of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi by the Congress, the Panchayati Raj is given much priority in many states of India including Bihar. However, the concept of Panchayati had led to the rise of a dangerous trend and it is totally influenced from Corruption.

According to authentic sources, in the recent Panchayat polls the economically strong and influential contestants from Kishanganj district has spent Rs. 10 lakh to 50-60 lakh during campaign. Of course, the heavy amount had floated by the contestants with the aim to win the elections and earn as much as they can.

The concept of Panchayati Raj is a good move, but in truth it has led to the corruption at village level. Earlier the Mukhiyas had been given many key responsibilities including selection of teachers for Panchayat level Primary schools. And the newly elected Nitish Kumar led NDA government had decided to give the development funds to Mukhiyas.

Being a common citizen, a Journalist by profession and an ardent follower of political happenings of the country, I am not at all happy with the modus operandi of Panchayati Raj and its power. It has already initiated the corruption at large scale and the welfare programmes run by the Centre and state government would hardly reach to the needy people...

Feedback and suggestions from all are welcome...................

  1. I am totally agreed with Mr.Alam.Politicization of Panchayats has desisted good people from doing the yeoman's job.Only money makers like state and national politics are taking active paricipation in the affairs of Village panchayats which is detrimental to the welfare of the village people. It seems that Panchayat concept has been initiated for grooming corrupt people to help more corrupt leaders in nState oer National politics.

  2. Dear Mudassir Bhai,
Yours saying about the panchaytiraj system is true. Its lost its objective which the then PM shri Rajiv ji thought. Please take up this matter and bring awareness among the people of Kishanganj. How the newly elected people purchase brand new SUVs and make marvellous and marbellous buildings at the cost of exchequer? There should be a revolution against the corruption. Unitedly we fight this disease which cause enough harm to the development of this poor district. Even our MP doesnot concern about the development so as the MLAs. Keep going. My best wishes are always with you. MOHD SHAHZAD ALAM
