The Bihar State Election Commission issued the notification for a ten-phased election for 2.62 lakh panchayat posts in Bihar on Monday (February 21, 2011). As per the officials of the polls will be held in April and May. The first phase of panchayat polls would be held on April 20 and the tenth phase would be held on May 28.
The Bihar government had already announced that the panchayat elections would be held on a non-party basis. Meanwhile, the state election commission has decided to take all necessary measures to ensure peaceful panchayat polls.
The electorate comprises over five crore voters. In 2006, Bihar became the first state in India to give 50 percent reservation to women in the panchayats.
